An electric patient lifter (also known as an electric patient lift, patient hoist, or Hoyer lift) is a motorized mechanical device used in healthcare settings and private homes to safely lift and transfer individuals with limited mobility or those unable to move on their own. It uses an electric motor to power the lifting and lowering functions, significantly reducing the physical strain and risk of injury for caregivers, and providing a smoother, more controlled transfer for the patient.

  • Electric Motor: The core of the device, powered by a rechargeable battery or AC outlet, which moves the lifting mechanism with the push of a button on a handheld remote or control panel.
  • Mast and Boom: A vertical mast connected to a base, with a horizontal or angled boom (arm) extending over the patient. The boom is raised and lowered by the motor.
  • Spreader Bar: A bar that hangs from the boom, to which a sling is attached.
  • Sling: A fabric harness placed under the patient to cradle and support them during the transfer. Slings come in various types (full-body, divided-leg, sit-to-stand, hygiene) to accommodate different needs and transfer types.
  • Base with Caster Wheels: A wide, stable base equipped with swivel wheels for maneuverability. Many models have an adjustable base that can be opened or closed to fit around furniture, such as beds or wheelchairs.
  • Safety Features: Essential safety components include emergency stop buttons, overload protection, audible low-battery warnings, and manual override mechanisms to safely lower the patient in case of power failure.
